Carl Jung
Colleague of Freud and inspired by classical psychoanalysis
Aimed to help people integrate and make aspects of the psyche and personality conscious
Placed great emphasis on the experience of spirituality
Conscious and Unconscious Mind
Conscious mind is made up of the ego, persona, two attitudes, and four functions.
The ego:
The center of the conscious mind
Provides sense of the world and our reality
Influences how we interact with our environment
The persona:
Idealized self that we share with the outside world
Hides problems and enables functioning in society
Helps us adapt to social situations
Inauthentic and does not accurately show our true emotions or thoughts
Attitudes and functions:
Two attitudes: extroversion and introversion
Four functions: thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition
Thinking and feeling are paired and sensation and intuition are paired
People are driven by one of the four factors, which is their primary function with the opposite function being less developed
The goal is to have a balance between the opposite functions
The unconscious mind is powerful and contains repressed information
The collective unconscious:
Made up of cumulative experiences throughout human existence
Archetype that is innate and passes on thoughts that are universal
The self:
Regulating center for personality
Balances the messages and needs of the conscious, personal conscious, and collective conscious
Emerges through dreams, symbols, images, and perception
Anima/animus:
Anima is the psychological feminine component in a man
Animus is the psychological masculine component in a woman
They influence how we feel about our masculine and feminine sides
Construct ideas about gender and shape relationships with others
The shadow:
Dark instincts we do not want to acknowledge
Opposite of persona, does not seek social acceptance and approval
The Personal Unconscious
Personal unconscious:
Unique to each individual
Memories, thoughts, and feelings that are repressed due to lack of intensity or importance over time
Daily triggers may help to recall repressed materials
Complexes:
Emotionally charged collection of thoughts, feelings, memories, and perceptions
Treatment
Goals:
Facilitating the emergence and understanding of material from the personal and collective unconscious
Regression followed by progression
Used to resolve inner conflicts and expand spirituality
Catharsis and emotional cleansing:
Intense emotions are discharged
People understand their past without having to relive them
Helps navigate present difficulties
Elucidation:
Work through emotional difficulties stemming from childhood experiences
Education:
Closes the gaps of development and maturation that derive from maladjustment or any imbalances
Transformation:
In-depth access to the collective unconscious and archetypes
Use of symbols:
Understanding and recognizing symbols that are repetitive and influence thoughts, feelings, and actions
Dream interpretation:
Easiest access to the unconscious mind
Recalling dreams and linking them to events that may have triggered them
Word association tests:
Clinician reads single word and client repeats first word that comes to mind
Provides a glimpse into the unconscious thought
Rituals:
Spiritual or religious element increasing cultural relevance and impact
